Zoonoses: monitoring animals to protect humans

A report on the fight against zoonotic diseases in Senegal, featuring our colleague Christophe Diagne.

The Andes hantavirus and Ebola outbreaks serve as a reminder of the risks associated with zoonoses – infectious diseases that can be transmitted from vertebrates to humans: they account for more than two-thirds of emerging diseases in humans, hence the importance of monitoring them.

In Senegal, several research teams are monitoring pathogens that may be circulating amongst rodents, goats or cattle. The approach is known as the ‘One Health’ approach, a strategy based on the principle that human health, animal health and environmental health are closely linked.
